the onion have been an important part of our diet. it has emerged as a favourite ingredient in many recipes. This vegetable can be grilled, sautèed, pickled, boiled, baked, fried...etc.
elisa and mattia, can you think of a recipe that results tastier with onions?
for example onion rings...
the onion is believed to have originated in Asia, dating back to 3500 BC. The ancient egyptians worshipped the onion, believing that its spherical shape and concentric rings symbolized eternity. into ancient Greece, athletes consumed large quantities because it would "lighten the balance of the blood". After Rome conquered greece, the onion became a straple in the Roman diet. Gladiators were rubbed down with onion juice to "firm up the muscles". During Middle ages, physicians prescribed onions to alleviate headaches, snakebites, and even hair loss.
there are four basic varieties of onion: yellow/brown, white, red and sweet. Yellow onions are the cheapest, and have the strongest flavour. White onions are a little bit sweeter and less pungent than yellow, as are red onions. Red onions are great either raw or grilled.

onion prefer a sunny position with a rich but light soil.
